Because you're on this website, it's likely that you understand how powerful the Internet can be for reaching your potential customers, and increasing your profits (whether it's working or not). Far too many small to mid-sized businesses create a website with an "If you build it, they will come" mentality, and find that quite the opposite is true!

So how can you get new customers from your website? After all, there's no reason to spend time & money creating and maintaining it unless it gives you a good return, right?

Well, there are many ways to drive sales with a website, but the key is that it all starts with traffic. Without visitors, it's impossible to boost sales. So, how do YOU find a website when you're searching for a product or service? The majority of people out there use Search Engines to find what they're looking for, which is why Google and Yahoo! get over 100,000,000 visitors every month!

It sounds amazing to be able to get tons of free traffic from these insanely popular websites, but unfortunately it's not that easy. Reason: Over time, savvy website owners realized they could "trick" the Search Engines and have an influence on their rankings. The Search Engines use highly-complex algorithms to index pages, filter down to the most relevant of them, then sort them in the best order for the person searching. So, webmasters have tried to 'crack the code' and effectively cheat the system ever since they found out how much money was to be made by making it to the top 10 results for keyword phrases related to their business.

However, here's the key: the Search Engines only make money when people keep coming back to use their service, and click on ads (Pay Per Click Advertising). If users don't feel like they're finding what they're looking for, they will stop using that Search Engine, meaning they stop clicking on ads. So, in order to constantly improve the quality of results, the SE's hired entire teams of people to thwart these cheating webmasters by improving the ranking algorithm and filtering out spammy, irrelevant results.

In the past decade or so, there have been multiple, crucial shifts in search algorithms, and many business owners have lost large amounts of money in the process. However, those that play by the rules and provide useful, unique and relevant content to their visitors (and implement a few techniques that the SE's themselves encourage) continue to make more and more money from their websites as months go by.
